Londonderry High student aims to refresh skateboard park
LONDONDERRY — Nick Lekas is not much into skateboarding.
“I’m kind of clumsy,” he admitted, standing in the town’s skateboard park off Mammoth Road recently. “I don’t have the courage to do anything crazy on a skateboard.”
Still, Lekas, an 18-year-old senior who attends Londonderry High, is drawn to the sport.
“It’s really the culture that I like,” he said. “It’s always intrigued me because there are no boundaries, no rules.
“It’s a sport, it’s in the X Games and everything, but it’s different,” Lekas explained. “The difference between skateboarding and football is that, in skateboarding, there’s no points, there’s not any regulations. It’s just, whoever does the coolest thing (wins).”
Over the last year, Lekas’ affection for skateboarding led him to declare an unusual Senior Project. With the help of friends and others in the community, he’s planning to renovate and restore the town’s battered skateboard park.
