Windham eyes creating ‘Downtown District’<\/strong>
\nVoters to consider 167-acre shopping, housing complex

\nWINDHAM \u2014 Residents who go to the polls in March have the opportunity to initiate a zoning change that would have a major impact on this small town \u2014 and on retail business activity in the region.<\/p>\n

The Windham Economic Development Committee wants voters to approve a new “Market Square Downtown District” on 167 acres near the intersections of Interstate 93, Route 111 and Wall Street.<\/p>\n

If approved, the rule would permit a developer to build a major shopping\/residential project to include shops, restaurants, senior citizen housing condos and a “walkable” area that would encourage the kind of “downtown community” residents have long wanted, according to supporters of the proposal.<\/p>\n

“The projected commercial value of the buildings and property would be about $100 million,” said Al Letizio, who is both chairman of the Board of Selectmen and vice chairman of the Economic Development Committee.<\/p>\n
