The new blue barrels are 1-½ times larger than the current green 65-gallon trash barrels. These new recycling barrels are convenient and easy to use. The large wheels make them easy to roll. They are strong and sturdy with little maintenance required. The attached lids minimize litter, and reduce water/snow weight.

Beginning on July 1, 2016 there will also be a change to the current recycling pick-up process. Recycling will be picked up bi-weekly (every other week). A “Recycling Collection Schedule” will be provided with the barrel to each residence indicating which week recycling will be collected. The “Recycling Collection Schedule” will also be available on the Town’s website for each resident to check at any time.

Currently residents receive one or two town provided 18-gallon recycle bins that are collected weekly. With the new recycling contract, residents will receive one 96-gallon recycle barrel to be collected biweekly. Based on feedback of similar recycling programs in other communities the 96-gallon barrel should provide enough capacity for the majority of residents. The Town will arrange an extra barrel for additional capacity for residents with 6 or more people in their household and for those who recycle more on a case by case basis.

The cost to the Town over 5 years to continue with weekly recycle pick-up would have been nearly $3.5 million dollars. By changing to a bi-weekly pick-up system, the Town is saving over $1,000,000 during the same time period. This represents a significant savings to the taxpayers.

The single-stream recycling items that will be collected will remain the same. Paper, Cardboard, Plastics, Glass, and Cans can all go together in the blue barrel. As in the previous recycling contract, bulky plastic items (large toys, barrels, lawn furniture etc.) should be disposed of at the Drop Off Center free of charge. Cardboard of any size is also accepted at the Drop Off Center free of charge.

Residents who do not want to keep their current bins / barrels which they used for recycling can dispose of them at the Drop Off Center free of charge.

There will be no changes to curbside “Trash” pick-up which will continue to be collected on a weekly basis. Overflow bags for trash will still be available at the Town Hall.

Posted on the Town Website 3/23/2016: An complete explanation of Londonderry’s new Bi-weekly Recycling Collection program Londonderry’s new Bi-Weekly Recycling Collection program is scheduled to begin on July 1, 2016. In June the Town will be delivering new blue 96-gallon barrels to each household currently using the curbside collection. The…

"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paywalled_content":false,"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false
[1

post-503","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-uncategorized
["GET
