{"id":654,"date":"2016-04-09T06:00:00","date_gmt":"2016-04-09T10:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/townunderground.com\/?p=654"},"modified":"2016-04-09T06:00:00","modified_gmt":"2016-04-09T10:00:00","slug":"lt-public-hearing-set-for-april-18-for-possible-leash-law","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/townunderground.com\/?p=654","title":{"rendered":"LT: Public Hearing Set for April 18 for Possible Leash Law"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>From the Londonderry Times<\/p>\n<p class=\"entry-title\"><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/londonderrytimes.net\/2016\/04\/public-hearing-set-april-18-possible-leash-law\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Public Hearing Set for April 18 for Possible Leash Law<\/a><br \/>\n<\/strong><time class=\"entry-date updated\" datetime=\"2016-04-06T16:09:10+00:00\">April 6, 2016<\/time> <span class=\"byline\"> by <span class=\"author vcard\"><a class=\"url fn n\" title=\"View all posts by Kaitlyn G Woods\" href=\"http:\/\/londonderrytimes.net\/author\/kwoods\/\" rel=\"author\">Kaitlyn G Woods<\/a> <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"entry-meta\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"entry-meta\">\n<p class=\"p1\">The Town Council is considering an amendment to the Town Code that would establish a \u201cleash law\u201d in Londonderry.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cTo further provide public safety, there is the need to prohibit dogs from running at large, fouling and creating disturbing noise,\u201d the proposed ordinance reads.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Based to the amendment, a dog will be deemed \u201cat large\u201d if the dog is in, on, or being walked upon a public street, park, parkway, cemetery, town forest, trail-way or other public place in town; or on a public street, sidewalk or right-of-way adjacent to a public place and is not secured by a leash or chain or within a carrier in the possession of a person of sufficient strength and age to effectively restrain the dog.<span id=\"more-32423\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Curtis Boles of Hovey Road told the Council he would like to see the amendment include a restriction on dogs in town cemeteries.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Boles said he and his wife have seen dogs running loose at Pillsbury Cemetery multiple times and have observed dogs urinating on gravestones.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cIt has been an ongoing problem. I don\u2019t think we should have a leash law in the cemeteries. Dogs don\u2019t need to be in there,\u201d he said, noting plots are small and dogs on leashes cross into people\u2019s space while visiting loved ones in the cemetery. \u201cI would strongly encourage you to not allow dogs, other than service dogs. It\u2019s not the place for them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Chairman John Farrell told Boles the Council is \u201cwilling to look very hard at the issue and entertain it in the public hearing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Boles recommended the Town consider installing at town cemeteries a sign similar to those at Derry cemeteries, which include an explicit restriction on dogs.
