{"id":656,"date":"2016-04-10T06:00:55","date_gmt":"2016-04-10T10:00:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/townunderground.com\/?p=656"},"modified":"2016-04-10T06:00:55","modified_gmt":"2016-04-10T10:00:55","slug":"lt-updated-hazard-mitigation-plan-gets-town-council-approval","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/townunderground.com\/?p=656","title":{"rendered":"LT: Updated Hazard Mitigation Plan Gets Town Council Approval"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>From the Londonderry Times:<\/p>\n<p class=\"entry-title\"><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/londonderrytimes.net\/2016\/04\/updated-hazard-mitigation-plan-gets-town-council-approval\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Updated Hazard Mitigation Plan Gets Town Council Approval<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<div class=\"entry-meta\"><time class=\"entry-date updated\" datetime=\"2016-04-06T16:05:38+00:00\">April 6, 2016<\/time> <span class=\"byline\"> by <span class=\"author vcard\"><a class=\"url fn n\" title=\"View all posts by Kaitlyn G Woods\" href=\"http:\/\/londonderrytimes.net\/author\/kwoods\/\" rel=\"author\">Kaitlyn G Woods<\/a> <\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"entry-meta\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"entry-meta\">\n<p>The Town Council approved an update of the Town\u2019s Hazard Mitigation Plan, which was approved by the State and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) as well.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The plan is designed to reduce or eliminate risk to people and property from a range of hazards, including wildfires, earthquakes, hurricanes, winter storms and flooding.<span id=\"more-32417\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The Hazard Mitigation Committee, comprised of Police, Fire, Highway, Building and Planning staff, held several meetings starting in January to update the plan, which was last updated in 2010.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cThis is a federal mandate to be eligible for future grant opportunities,\u201d Comprehensive Planner John Vogl said at Monday night\u2019s Town Council meeting. \u201cThis document is very much an encyclopedic document. It follows a federal template every town in the State follows. There are no mandates attached.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The Southern New Hampshire Planning Commission moderated the meetings, helping the Committee to identify the community\u2019s vulnerability to each hazard and to propose new strategies to potentially mitigate or reduce future damage.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Former Fire Chief and Hazard Mitigation Committee member Al Sypek told the Council at their April 4 meeting that the town must update their plan every five years to qualify for grants through FEMA for non-emergency mitigation items \u201cthat might cause the Town to respond repeatedly because of poor design or codes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Sypek said top priorities identified in the plan include upgrading the Town\u2019s radio communication system and installing emergency access lanes in the Musquash Conservation Area.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cIf you look at Lake Massabesic in Manchester, they have fire lanes that are gated and they serve as hiking and horse trails. These access lanes can serve two purposes, both for public safety and recreation,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cRadio communications is a safety issue and should be addressed immediately,\u201d Councilor Jim Butler said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Fire Chief Darren O\u2019Brien said the Department has been collaborating with Highway staff and Police to investigate infrastructure in town and determine what existing infrastructure the Town could build upon.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cWe hope to have something for this upcoming budget cycle,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Recalling an agreement with AT&amp;T to allow the Town to install an additional antenna to serve the Fire Department on a tower located behind Town Hall, the Council directed town staff to investigate the original site plan for the tower to see if the agreement exists.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The Council asked for updates on the progress to address the telecommunications weakness at their meetings on May 2 and June 6.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>From the Londonderry Times: Updated Hazard Mitigation Plan Gets Town Council Approval April 6, 2016 by Kaitlyn G Woods The Town Council approved an update of the Town\u2019s Hazard Mitigation Plan, which was approved by the State and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) as well.
