In a weekly column in the Derry News Londonderry Town Clerk Sherry Farrell departs from recounting a recent visit from relatives to commenting on this years town election. The column Learning to get along? It’s elemental
Earlier in the week we had just completed our town and school elections, which is a process that starts months before and it’s an honor but exhausting if your name is on the ballot and someone is running against you.
Some people believe that no one should run unopposed, but I only agree with that if the person running is running for the right reasons and has a true understanding of what the position entails.
It’s important that they do their homework and are informed. I don’t agree with people just putting their names on the ballot because they can. These are all-important positions, representing our residents and the town that you love, and running for office should be taken seriously and as an honor.
For our Library Trustees we had two open positions and eight people running for that office. I have to say in this case each person that signed up did so for the right reasons.
All of the candidates for this position that came on the Londonderry View cable TV show were prepared and sincerely loved our library. They wanted to assist and make a difference. Sadly only two of these eight people could win. After an election the next step is to be sworn in.
When Nancy Hendricks, who had served on our School Board, was taking her Library Trustee oath of office on Friday morning, she got very teary. She understands the honor of being selected by the people of the community, and I know Nancy also understands and feels for those who worked hard but did not win.

Farrell states that those running for Library Trustee ‘did so for the right reasons’ why point to only one contested race in town? Is the Town Clerk implying that other contested positions were running, in her opinion, for the the wrong reasons?
