As we approach the deadline for Citizens Petition Warrant Articles we should review last years articles. The articles below were passed on March 12, 2024
Article 17, Yes 2686 / No 1430 – Planning Board as elected positions?
Article 18, Yes 3085 / No 1077 – Include public input at the start and end of each meeting
Article 19, Yes 3125 / No 1017 – Committees and board shall meet at a time the best for the general population
Article 20 Yes – 3204 / No 933 – Record Public meetings
Article 22 Yes – 2427 / No 1621 – Remove the word “Advisory” from “Budget Committee”
While some boards chose to implement some aspect of the warrant articles others have not. The Council held a few meetings to discuss the articles, but never recommended solidifying anything.
There have been three Town Council Budget workshops, all of which had no public comment after the presentation. Article 18 would have allowed residents to provide comment, but the Town Council has refused to add a second public comment period at the end of their meetings. There was discussion of having Town legal staff weigh in, but as has happened many times in the past, nothing has been done. The Council has simply kicked the can down the road.
